As part of the Mountain Publishing International Festival that will take place from September 18th to 27th, 2009 in the city town of Bolzano, tonight will be opened the exhibition "Yosemite Valley – Before Ansel Adams” at the Foto-forum Gallery in Bolzano, September 22th, 2009 at 19:00 hrs., with stereoscopic panoramic photographs taken in 1902.

Since 1895, the Underwood & Underwood, probably the biggest house in the world specialized in stereoscopic photography of all kinds, published in carton boxes with the form of a book the so called Boxed Sets, several series of 50-100 original mounted prints consisting on images of cities, towns, varied events and war conflicts. What was fundamental in the image production was not to report the authorial credits, since the stereograms were usually labeled and numbered only with the name of the publisher house, and rarely with the name of the photographer, but to state the way these images would be seen. On the backside of the box, it was referred with golden characters as follows “through the stereoscope”.

Yosemite Valley is relevant for the visual culture in the wide world since the early years of landscape photography until nowadays. It is present in the collective imaginary of every photographer,and not only, due to the extraordinary photographs created in the 1930’s by the great photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984), the most famous figure between the American landscape photographers.

This exhibition is presented for the second time in Italy, and consists in images and texts taken from the volume: Yosemite Valley Through the Stereoscope, published (1st. Ed.) in 1902 by Underwood & Underwood. In this occasion, at the Foto-forum Gallery in Bolzano, there will be displayed 25 panels with stereoscopic photographs, and one will have access to a guide and a map so as to identify every reproduction through information about position, orientation and the used angle of every photogram, following the exclusive patented model of the publishing house. Moreover, stereoscopic glasses will be offered to look at the images and perceive the three-dimensionality.

At the opening of the exhibition will participate Augusto Golin and the curator Antonello Stata, representing the TrentoFilmfestival and the Italian Stereoscopic Archive, respectively. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Italian Stereoscopic Archive, the TrentoFilmfestival and AVS South Tyrol Alpine Association.

This is an invitation to reflect about the worth of archival collections and the importance of making it accessible, understandable and valuable to the public. It is about giving the chance to people of acquiring new keys of lecture of far and forgotten places and, what is for me the most exciting, of exploring the ways of perceiving, once pioneer in the sensorial experimentation in the early1900’s, now really difficult to have access to in a ultra-advanced technological world.

He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by the American Friends Service Committee for his work "to liberate both the Palestinian and the Israeli people from the yoke of structural violence" and "to build equality between their people by recognizing and celebrating their common humanity."

The landscape in between of Michael Ackerman at the “Bieler Fototage 2009”

How impressive could be for one to know that somebody of the family has gone away from the own country to live somewhere else? Who knows when he is going to return. Through the years, it seems that it does not matter at all. I have been living in a similar situation regarding many of my family group: aunts, uncles, cousins, one of my brothers… me. Maybe it is just a natural disposition in the family. I realize just in my early adulthood that it has been normal for us. Nevertheless, it is a kind of condition that put every single person in a hairline, behind or in front of it, nearby. We could be many, but we feel alone the same way.

The work of the photographer Michael Ackerman “Departure” (Poland 1999 – 2009) reminds me of this condition. Together with the proposals of other six photographers, his photography will be presented in a simultaneous but not synchronized dia projection entitled “The Singled Person”. This project intends to offer a subjective reading of the relationship between the individual and its environment.

landscape in between. A sort of inheritance.“

“The Singled Person” (photographs by Michael Ackerman, Morten Andersen, Thorsten Kirchhoff, Peer Kugler, André Lützen, Hisashi Murayama and Filippo Romano) has been presented at the New York Photo Festival in 2008, and now is the turn of the City of Biel/Bienne, in Switzerland, to make it visible through its exhibition in different locations around the city. This project already makes me feel undeniable empathy.

”Living the bunker as a unique, immense corpus of resonance”

Curiously, the technical term used to design a military construction for defense is the same to that representing also the place and the concept of the fifth essence in Art: the Opera.

The motivation of this work is the desire of giving voice to the exclusive acoustic qualities of the Fortress Bunker No. 3, through an itinerary in its interior conceived as both a theater and a sonorous labyrinth.

Tiziano Popoli, the author, confronts the architectural characteristics of the Bunker to the form of a trumpet or an human ear, and stated the following: “the experience could be also an immeasurable ear, able to perceive a kind of sense of war -kriegerische Stimmung- that this place expels, in such a manner that is possible to modulate and transmute this sense through the resonance of its secret corpus and externalize it in the way a ritual trumpet does."

“Culture meets Economy”

at the Conference Hall of the European Academy of Bolzano-Bozen,

organized by The European Academy of Bolzano-Bozen (EURAC research), The Free University of Bolzano-Bozen, The Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige and The Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation.

The proposed formula for this year is:
Economic Crisis = Cultural Crisis?

Relations between culture and crisis, specially those related to the global financial crisis, will be the main topic to discuss on the third edition of the annual conference. Some questions can be:

- What will happen with the relationship between economic and social development worldwide?
- Which is the effect of the crisis on culture?
- How the cooperation between economy and culture can help the dealing with financial crisis?

On June 30th will take place a scientific workshop “Culture and Crisis“, a day before the conference, where participants should generate the own contribution to be exposed in the conference.
The participation is free of charge. To close the night, will be offered a jazz concert by Mederic Collignon's Jus De Bocse quartet, as part of the Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige.

L’artista ci parlerà della sua opera. La serata sarà condotta dal critico e giornalista Giorgio Vonmetz Schiano.

Un’ottima occasione per conoscere la più recente opera dell’artista di origine ladino, che da anni lavora fra i confini della pittura e la fotografia. Attraverso il suo lavoro, è riuscito a sconvolgere il carattere formale di entrambi ambiti nell’arte contemporanea, mediante la creazione di nuove interpretazioni per le definizioni di pittura e fotografia. Si tratta della progettazione di spazi che presentano tracce visive, quale documento della memoria.
Guardando le opere, ci si può chiedere se queste immagini appartengono ad una memoria che cerca di essere integra, fedele; se possiamo parlare di momenti passati, o magari di casualità che hanno combaciato perfettamente, bene al fine di rendere un effetto di “vissuto”, e da chi.

“Immagini, la cui valenza pittorica appartiene ad esperienze acquisite in passato dall’ artista, che ora sono felicemente sublimate in una felice sintesi fotografica. Jóvenes mujeres migrantes, residentes en Alto Adige, se dirigen a todos nosotros de manera abierta a través de sus retratos de cuerpo entero con un sencillo y efectivo fondo gris, en la exposición fotográfica "Let's get married" de Brigitte Niedermair.

Treinta y cuatro mujeres residentes en Valdaora decidieron participar al proyecto a cura de Annelie Bortolotti y Leticia Ragaglia, y en colaboración con el Instituto de minorías y autonomías regionales del EURAC. En él, se busca poner en discusión el conflicto de pertenencia e identidad causado por no ser del lugar y por la creciente presencia de migrantes en el territorio. En Alto Adige, este fenómeno está creciendo y volviendo más compleja la ya existente realidad multicultural. Buscar un sentido propio, coherente con las prácticas culturales de las jóvenes y de sus varios círculos sociales como familia y amigos, es la dificultad de cada día que contrasta su existencia con la de otras mujeres de la misma edad y cultura, en otras circunstancias. Contradicciones y situaciones comprometedoras en juego. Esta noche, se hablará de ello durante el encuentro “Entre velo y piercing”, con Edina Pusztai, lingüista y consultora de Caritas y Gerhard Hetfleisch, director del Centro para Migrantes ZeMiT de Innsbruck. Moderará Verena Gruber, periodista y moderadora de ORF. Con dibujos en tiempo real de Rudi. Live Music: Ethnic Echoes.

Para enmarcar la exposición y el encuentro, la artista ideó la instalación de una reproducción fotográfica de dimensiones tales que cubren un lado de la torre del EURAC. En ella se puede ver un camión en el que viajan hombres hacia tierras desconocidas, en busca de mejores condiciones de vida, y tal vez de una esposa, posiblemente en Valdaora. Una vez terminada la exposición, la tela en la que está impresa dicha fotografía será reutilizada en la confección de bolsas a fin de recabar fondos para la beneficencia de una asociación dedicada a proyectos a favor de migrantes.

A feeling about EASA 2008

I must confess my surprise in front of the dimension of the 10th Biennial EASA conference organized by the European Association of Social Anthropologists, four days at the end of August in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Talking with some “old” members, it was said that never before was so big and so warmly attended; so many people together from different countries, let’s say, arriving from every continent.

All members of MASN Moving Anthropology Student Network were gently invited to participate in the EASA Conference and were part of the staff too. It happened after the activities of the meeting, this time about “Borders, Boundaries and Frontiers” that took place during August 19th -24th, in Osilnica, a little Slovenian town, near to the frontier with Croatia.

The MASNers left the serene landscape of Osilnica to reach the capital and its active streets, gardens and plazas in the city town. There, we had the opportunity to encounter interesting people from the universe of the social-anthropological field. I started to imagine that at least those days Ljubljana was ours, I mean, of the EASA community, the community of social researchers. We were everywhere sharing, discussing or simply enjoying the free time between lectures, round tables and plenary sessions, without excluding the nocturne occasions: the reception at the Ljubljana Castle, the Terrafolk and Kontrabant concerts, the boat trip on the Ljubljanica river, the dancing night, the walks in the center, etc.

In schedule were previewed 129 workshops including presentations, lectures and round tables. Film and new media sessions, meetings with editors and the parallel activities such as performances, the Sanje festival “Anthropology at the Peripheries” and a variety of musical appointments. All of it intensive moments to reflect about “Experiencing Diversity and Mutuality”.

With the aim of the conference to “exploit and accentuate the crucial importance of a direct – ethnographic – experience of diversity and mutuality in ethnology and anthropology”, the main idea was to explore the concept of mutuality from every possible perspective favouring conceptions derived from the relation between the notion of mutuality and that of cultural diversity.

The participants had in front of them some questions such as “what can we do with mutuality today”, “what are the modalities of its experience”, “why is it relevant”, “how can we relate it to diversity”, etc. These were the initial points to talk about mutuality including many scenarios as possible, so as to give the chance to professionals, young researchers and students to find moments of reflection about their role and own work.

“Mutuality, rather than unity, may be found beyond the diversity of cultures; it may result in a mutual research for compatibility among differences.” (EASA 2008)

This phrase remembers me the concept of exchange experience that I refer when working with intercultural mediation and I would like to share here:

“A multicultural society can be developed in an intercultural sense or may choose the multiculturalism understood as a unit of cultures, one close to the other. In the last case, the society accepts a juxtaposition of cultures, almost promoting the preservation of differences." (Aluffi Pentini 2002)

At this point, it is important to notice that the cultural mediation in its pedagogical quality is trying to encourage in society the interchange as a transaction, rather than just accept the coexistence. In other words, one should be conscious of the risk that involves the encounter, the exchange: a risk of a “cultural contamination” or the lose of some exclusive cultural privileges. This contamination could be and should be seen as a positive consequence of the interrelation.

One did not had to attend to a large number of lectures, to perceive that the Conference in itself was a vivid example of exchange and contamination of the senses from the diversity of topics, perspectives, anecdotes, lections and personal records in the anthropological practice.

The example of the Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural

I found interesting and have great respect for the anthropological research activity of Dr. Gunther Dietz (Professor Titular of Social Anthropology at the University of Granada, Spain) and Ph.D Candidate Laura S. Mateos Cortés (professor in Multicultural societies and Intercultural Studies at the Intercultural University of Veracruz), done in Veracruz, in the eastern region of Mexico and presented as part of the Workshop 034 “Anthropologies of University Reform: Restructuring of Higher Education – Anthropological Perspectives”.

Their participation entitled “Indigenising” or “Interculturalising” Universities in Mexico: An Ethnography of the Local Appropriation of Globalised Diversity Discourse inside the “Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural” exposed the case of a new institution of higher education, the Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural that reaches four indigenous regions offering a B.A. in “Intercultural management for development”. I agree with the authors that it is an innovative discourse of higher instruction, based on a “hybrid mixture of conventional university teaching, community-oriented research and “employability"-driven development projects”. Frequently, traditional universities promise that their programs are designed to create profiles of experts in real problem solving and real project management. In the practice, it is so far from what one find in context. And things become complex if it is in indigenous realities. That is the reason why the effort of this research program is so admirable: configuring an education system from the community, for the community, with the community.

Their intervention remembers me not only the power of politic interests in the Mexican University system and the difficulty to access the superior instruction in my country. It also remembers me the relevance of the self-perception to make a choice when desiring to do professional studies, to have a profession, to enter to the university. Is it for me? Can I desire such thing? Would I have what I am looking for?

Finally, I was thinking about the differences of the concept of “higher education system”, result of the combination with some established terms that the Mexican middle-class society used to apply when referring to the kind of education: “indigenous”, “for the indios”, “ethnic”, “multicultural”… and (hoping that tomorrow more frequently) “intercultural”.

Second person addressing

Changing the topic to mutualism, I appreciated the participation of Dr. Michael Carrithers, Professor of Anthropology at the Durham University, titled “Address in the second person: A condition of life and Anthropology” during the first Plenary Session. It was an interesting consideration of mutuality. Also, it exemplified a case of diverse thinking in the discipline exercise in relation to its tradition -an expectation of the conference this year. I believe that Dr. Michael Carrithers’ important contribution was that of considering the daily life dynamics of the human being relevant to anthropology. He remembered to the community that in every anthropological motion happens the second person addressing. Analyzing the social dynamics, he presented a three-mechanism system to explain that the activity of the anthropologist is at the end a human relation moment, and one should not forget that takes place a social exchange. One is inevitably involved and one should be aware of it: “representing, cultivating and addressing”.

I could not avoid making personal considerations and taking notes, relating his statements to my work about the photographic act and the role of photography in social research methodologies. The fact of being there doing research with a photographic apparatus or, may be, just talking about photography or involving photography in endless ways, it is a social moment where conventions and discoveries take place and significances appear. One is always gaining an impression, a reaction, a lection, in the way one is always giving something instead.

Just to finish with the comments about Dr. Carrithers’ participation, was notable his simple way of presenting, aided by typographic diagrams and pictures. Research conclusions or anthropological statements, in the same way as promotional slogans in advertising, are difficult to expose if one has no such ability to make clear presentations.

Punishing, preventing and educating

About the recent fire emergency suffered in South Italy, it was published a recommendation to attend the problem.

It is said:
[ To punish, prevent and educate: these are the words that shall be better used in situations like those of the last weeks in the regions of South Italy, in front of fire emergencies.

“Punishment” and “prevention” are in any case important, but what one can do today for healing the probable situation in the future is to promote “education”. There is a several number of fire emergencies due to the no-attention or imprudence of people. And what is more significant: not everyone appreciates the value of the ground, the forest, the territory as a human patrimony.]

It is talking about the need of designing information in an extended measure. I think it should be no more giving traditional advices through “informative” printed and/or electronic systems, but, helping in the creation of an integral management system that safeguards the territory, starting to include actions for promoting consciousness about the real meaning of the emergency.

This educational system should appeal to values. It should be something else than the no-more-informative-system that repeats phrases, which today have no more sense, no impact on society.

Me sirven otros oídos

Desde luego que ahora, yo, sentada aquí, no me queda más que creer en mis palabras. Y con ellas alcanzar otros oídos.

No son oídos tercos estos que yo tengo. No. Pero me sirven otros. Conseguir un momento de atención hacia otras cosas a las acostumbradas. Otras cosas que me son ahora decisivas y mas urgentes que la mera necesidad de estar bien –aquella de haber comido algo, dormido un poco, salido un rato a tomar aire fresco. Darle un lugar a un tanto de palabras, así nomás, como para ver si se puede entender mejor lo que a uno le pasa.

Quién sabe cuantas veces me pregunto ¿por dónde empiezo?. Esa dificultad de empezar historias nuevas. Primero he de repasar mis inseguridades para salir con la seguridad de que sigo teniendo aquellas y no me han asaltado otras, así es que nada malo puede pasar...

Notebooks for Chinese children

I found these notebooks in Lianzhou (Canton, China) in a small store on the way to the Candy Factory. Forming two columns, a lot of these were in a table, next to cigarette packages, snacks, plastic bottles of water, little "tetrapack" flavored milks, roller pens, pencils and eraser gums.

Interesting is the graphic design of every cover, but also these particular grids for studying. Specially, the diagonal, vertical and horizontal lines that form a precise matrix for the learning of Chinese characters.

“English” Notebook

When I saw it, I was expecting to see inside some words in English or something similar.

My surprise was to find a grid like that used for musical notes.
