Open City Museum presents the proposal of the artist collective Macello – Butch-ennial created especially for the interior spaces of the ex-cinema Astra in the city of Bressanone/Brixen, South Tyrol (I). It is part of the 3rd edition of the International Conference “think more about – days of sustainability“, whose theme this year is “The Art of Freedom.” The initiative is promoted by Terra Institute, Convention Centre Abbey of Neustift, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Innsbruck University and Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development recognized by the United Nations University (UNU).

Open City Museum creates conditions to foster the local cultural and artistic production, facilitates the collaboration and networking, creates a bridge between the institutions and independent actors of art, locates alternative ways of managing resources in order to achieve a common goal: to animate the local art scene with innovative proposals. It creates a platform for dialogue, for sharing of experiences and for the social development through art, highlighting the potential of the artistic, social and human capital present in the territory.

_ contemporary art exhibition
CineScope – The Art of Freedom” is a space to come into contact with art in a direct and participatory way. The artworks are the starting point of an exploration towards other ways of imagining the world and conceiving “the art of freedom”. It is an area where encounters and confrontations may happen, where art has again a symbolic function for society. “CineScope” aims to lead the audience to displacement, both physically and mentally, within the ex-cinema Astra, a fascist-era building  – today under the protection of the Cultural Heritage Office of the province of Bolzano. This historic building could become a center for cultural and artistic production that might enrich the cultural offer of the territory.

The artists of Macello – Butch-ennial have created their works reflecting on the concept ‘The Art of Freedom’ in relation to the architectural space, freely and individually, as well as in harmony with each other toward exhibiting together. Inspired by the philosopher and economist John Stuart Mill, who considered that ‘we are free in so far as we are able to be authors of our lives, to familiarize ourselves day by day in the difficult grammar of choice, until we learn how to decide consciously’, the exhibition aims to emphasize the power of art (1) to challenge the status quo in contemporary society and
 (2) to initiate a reflection on the questions: what does “to be free” mean today? Is it possible to measure freedom?

Art as transformed energy – During the three days of the conference “think more about”, from May 23 to May 25, it will be possible to interact with an artwork installation by the artist Giovanni Melillo Kostner, at the entrance of ex-cinema: the public is invited to ride a bicycle and generate energy to turn on lamps. The bicycle is part of the set for a video shooting. At the end, the video clips will be collected and assembled into a single video that will become an artwork in itself. Il will be added to the rest of the exhibition in the central movie theatre room. The aim of the installation is to make the public interact with the artefact and the space, also to evoke the relationship between art and technology, especially emphasizing the functional and creative aspects of the last one. The illumination device platform is a project gently offered by the ‘Officina dell’Energia’ and the Professor Gianpietro Gai, Faculty of Design and Art of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. The bicycle is a courtesy of ‘Bici Alto Adige’.

_Interactive workshop
“Write it on the wall! – To use the art object as a cognitive tool for the individual and collective growth of the society is another goal of this initiative. In collaboration with the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano and Terra Institute, an interactive laboratory will be open to the public during the exhibition. At the laboratory a “manifesto” on the ‘art of freedom’ will be elaborated following the principles of a sustainable and collaborative culture. In order to stimulate thoughts and expressive actions, truly free and responsible, the public is invited to leave their ideas written on the walls of the workshop which will be temporarily housed in the basement room.
The artist Valentina Miorandi will present a performance as part of the laboratory. It consists in a piece work that starts a travel from the ex-cinema Astra, making some stops in other places where its composition will be expanded – Fack Festival of Cesena and the Mediterranean Biennale – to finally return to Bressanone on June 10, with a story to tell to the public.
The travel journey will be progressively reported. The produced material will initiate the participative process of the art manifesto’s construction. The process will continue over time on the web using the tag #cinescope. Professor Filippo Carlo Ceretti of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, is responsible of the scientific direction of the workshop.

_public discussion/ art talk
As part of the exhibition “CineScope”, a public discussion will take place on June 7 at 8 pm, in the foyer of the ex-cinema Astra: “Towards a Manifesto. On art manifestos, sustainable conducts and performances”. In collaboration with ‘Franz Magazine’, the meeting will be transmitted live via web streaming on the website www.franzmagazine.com.
